Connecticut Legislators Propose Extensive Gun Control Measures Including ‘Ammunition Eligibility Certificates’

Ammunition Eligibility Certificates

Legislators in Connecticut, the same state as the recent Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, are poised to pass one of the most extensive gun control measures in decades. In what some are calling a clearly unconstitutional power grab, both Democrat and Republican lawmakers have proposed banning some 100 guns deemed to be "assault weapons", banned high capacity ammo magazines over 10 rounds, creates immediate universal background checks (meaning you can't sell a gun to your brother without doing a background check) and creates "ammunition eligibility certificates" to be able to purchase ammo.

The sweeping anti-2nd Amendment, anti-gun legislation also calls for those who currently own those 100 "assault weapons" to be banned, to register their weapons as well as any ammo magazine that holds over 10 rounds. Did you get that? If this unconstitutional measure passes and you own a 17 round magazine for your Sig Sauer P250 handgun (or any 11 round or larger magazine for any gun), you will have to register that magazine.

Liberal progressives have surely taken advantage of the murder of 26 people in Newtown, Connecticut and are on the war path against guns. Unfortunately, they are passing measures that will only make it harder for law abiding citizens to guns to defend themselves while criminals will simply ignore these measures. Also note that none of the proposals put forth and likely to pass in Connecticut would have had no impact whatsoever on what Adam Lanza did at Sandy Hook. Even if you register ammo magazines and ban assault weapons, someone like Adam Lanza will not be prevented from accessing them illegally like Adam did. This is the nature of the sick society we live in today and unfortunately the sicker it gets, the less law abiding citizens will be able to defend themselves thanks to bureaucratic simpletons like those that legislate foolishness in Connecticut.

The Connecticut deal includes a ban on new high-capacity ammunition magazines like the ones used in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left 20 children and six educators dead. There are also new registration requirements for existing magazines that carry 10 or more bullets, something of a disappointment for some family members of Newtown victims who wanted an outright ban on the possession of all high-capacity magazines and traveled to the state Capitol on Monday to ask lawmakers for it.

The package also creates what lawmakers said is the nation’s first statewide dangerous weapon offender registry, creates a new “ammunition eligibility certificate,” imposes immediate universal background checks for all firearms sales, and extends the state’s assault weapons ban to 100 new types of firearms and requires that a weapon have only one of several features in order to be banned.

The newly banned weapons could no longer be bought or sold in Connecticut, and those legally owned already would have to be registered with the state, just like the high-capacity magazines.

Senate Minority Leader John McKinney, a Fairfield Republican whose district includes Newtown, said Republicans and Democrats have understood they needed to “rise above politics” when they decided to come up with a legislative response to the massacre.

“At the end of the day, I think it’s a package that the majority of the people of Connecticut I know will be proud of,” he said.
