Jay Carney Obama defends the First Amendment

In light of the IRS scandal and the collection of Associated Press phone records to the Department of Justice scandal, White House press secretary Jay Carney on Tuesday stated that President Barack Obama remained a “strong defender of the First Amendment.” We assume he made this statement just to let everyone know, in case there was any question.

Here is what Mr Carney had to say below. Note that he is reading from a prepared statement, apparently wanting to get his quote right.

“The president is a strong defender of the first amendment, and a firm believer in the need for the press to be unfettered in its ability to conduct investigative reporting and facilitate a free flow of information. He also of course recognizes the need for the Justice Department to investigate alleged criminal activity without undue influence.”
