Should food stamp recipients take drug tests

The Republican lead House is expected to consider a bill this week that will probably make liberals freak out and say that conservatives want to starve poor people. It would cut food stamps by an estimated $4 billion annually and allow states to set their own new work requirements for recipients.

The bill would also end government waivers that have allowed able-bodied adults who don’t have dependents to receive food stamps indefinitely. Believe it or not we actually have a program like that you and I are paying for.

The vote comes after the House defeated a wide-ranging farm bill in June that Republicans took a beating in the press for because many congresspersons believed the cuts to the nearly $80 billion-a-year food stamp program weren’t high enough. That bill would have made only $2 billion a year in cuts which Democrats of course went nearly apoplectic over. It just shows you how hard it really is to reform the absolute mess we are in with free government giveaways.

Food stamps have been part of farm legislation for decades, but House leaders separated the food and farm programs after the bill’s defeat in June and passed a farm-only bill in July. The Republican leaders led by Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia then wrote the separate food stamp bill in an effort to appease the more staunch conservatives who have been wanting much deep cuts to the nearly broke food stamp program.

The House bill also would raise eligibility standards and try to reduce the numbers of people on the program by allowing individual states to require recipients to be tested for drug use. It would also bar convicted murderers, rapists and pedophiles from receiving food stamps.

What do you think, should food stamp recipients be required to take a drug test?
