Welfare Spending Up 32% Under Obama

We all know President Obama has spent like no other president ever. In fact, more national debt has accumulated under his tenure than any other president in history. Obama has consistently presided over budgets during his 4 years in office that spend above a trillion dollars more than we take in in revenue every year. The $400 billion deficits under George W Bush, while they are staggering, are nothing compared to the $1.3 trillion deficits under Obama.

One of the major contributors to President Obama's gargantuan deficits has been welfare spending. Welfare spending has grown by leaps and bounds over the past four years while Obama has been in office. The total welfare spending in 2011 came to a staggering $746 billion. That is more than Social Security, basic defense spending or any other single portion of the federal budget.

There are some 80 federal programs designed to give assistance to low income Americans and they got a big boost from Obama's 2009 stimulus spending. The poor economy since 2008 certainly has something to do with more people needing assistance however, eligibility requirements have been broadened in many cases so more people qualify for assistance when they may not have in the past.

Welfare spending totaled $563 billion in 2008 and has risen steadily to that alarming $746 billion in 2011 with no lessening of spending in sight. That is a 32% increase over the 4 years from 2008 to 2011 inclusive.

The two biggest chunks of welfare spending are Medicaid at $296 billion for 2011 and next on the list is food stamps that end up costing taxpayers $75 billion in 2011, nearly doubling the total from 2008. Obama has seen the total number of food stamp recipients go from 32 million when he took office to over 46 million not even 4 years later. So much for an Obama recovery.
