What is the purpose of Congress

Why do we have a Congress made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate, and more importantly, what is their job?

Here's what it says on the Capitol visitors center website about what the purpose of Congress is,

"Through legislative debate and compromise, the U.S. Congress makes laws that influence our daily lives. It holds hearings to inform the legislative process, conducts investigations to oversee the executive branch, and serves as the voice of the people and the states in the federal government."

Oh, lets check out that phrase, "conducts investigations to oversee the executive branch." What exactly does that mean. Simple, it says that Congress is a check on the president's power. That's why we have 3 branches of government, to divide their power and provide check and balances. And one of duties of Congress is to make sure that chief executives such as Barack Hussein Obama, do not abuse their power.
